About OpenAI

The OpenAI token price index is $1.84 per 1M tokens today, down 13.6% since yesterday, down 6.3% over the past week and down 43.1% over the past month. Over the past year it has ranged from $0.89 to $8.07. It is the usage-weighted average of the posted prices of OpenAI's 6 models, blending 3 input tokens with 1 output token; GPT-6 Luna has the largest share of usage, at 60.5%. It is calculated once a day, for each UTC day, shortly after the day ends.

OpenAI makes the GPT models and ChatGPT. It was founded in December 2015 in San Francisco and is led by chief executive Sam Altman. In March 2026 it closed a funding round of $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation, said it was generating "$2B in revenue per month" and counted more than 900 million weekly ChatGPT users. It sells its models through its own API, Microsoft Azure and, since June 1, 2026, Amazon Bedrock, whose commercial-region prices match OpenAI's own. OpenRouter lists Azure at the same prices as OpenAI.

Models and list prices

GPT-6 Astra$10.00$50.00$20.00
GPT-5.6 Sol, promotional price$4.00$20.00$8.00
GPT-6.1 Sol$2.00$10.00$4.00
GPT-6 Luna$0.10$0.50$0.20

USD per 1M tokens, standard tier, prompts up to 272K tokens, on October 24, 2026, from OpenAI's pricing page. Longer prompts cost more, $20/$75 on Astra. Batch and Flex processing cost half, Fast mode twice the standard rate on new models and Ultrafast six times. Cached input costs a tenth of the input price, but a twentieth on GPT-6.1 Sol. Reasoning tokens are billed as output, and regional processing costs 10% more. The GPT-5.6 Sol price is promotional "at least through November 21, 2026".

What this index measures

Each day's value averages the standard prices OpenAI posts for its own models, weighted by each model's tokens in OpenRouter's daily rankings and blended at 3 input tokens to 1 output token. Cheap models carry most of the usage, so the index sits far below the flagship's price; the first paragraph above names the most-used model today.

What moves OpenAI's index

  • Model mix. GPT-6 Astra's blended price is 100 times GPT-6 Luna's, so a small shift of usage between them moves the index more than most price changes.
  • Flagships launched at higher prices. OpenAI's flagship list price rose from $1.25/$10 for GPT-5 in August 2025 to $5/$30 for GPT-5.5 in April 2026 and $10/$50 for GPT-6 Astra in September 2026. Its Pro models, such as GPT-5.5 Pro at $30/$180, cost more still.
  • Cuts after launch. On July 30, 2026 GPT-5.6 Luna became 80% cheaper and Terra 20% cheaper, and on August 21 GPT-5.6 Sol's input and output prices fell 20% and 33%.
  • Promotions and channels. Promotional prices can end at short notice: GPT-5.6 Sol's is promised only "at least through November 21, 2026". OpenAI has offered some discounts only through OpenRouter; the index uses the price OpenAI posts for its own endpoint.

FAQ

How much does the OpenAI API cost per million tokens? In the current GPT-6 line, from $0.10 input and $0.50 output for GPT-6 Luna to $10 and $50 for GPT-6 Astra, as in the table above. OpenAI also still lists older and Pro models, from $0.05/$0.40 for GPT-5 nano to $150/$600 for o1-pro. This index is the usage-weighted average across OpenAI's models.

Can the index fall while OpenAI raises prices? Yes. The index follows usage: if more tokens go to cheaper models such as Luna, it falls even while the flagship's price rises.

How often is it updated? Once a day: each UTC day's value is calculated shortly after that day ends, from the day's OpenRouter volumes and the prices posted then. The site checks for new data every 2 to 3 hours.
