About xAI
The xAI token price index is $3.00 per 1M tokens today, unchanged since yesterday, unchanged over the past week and unchanged over the past month. Over the past year it has ranged from $0.28 to $3.00. It is the usage-weighted average of the posted prices of xAI's model, blending 3 input tokens with 1 output token. It is calculated once a day, for each UTC day, shortly after the day ends.
xAI makes the Grok models. Elon Musk founded it in 2023, and SpaceX acquired it in February 2026; its developer documentation is now branded SpaceXSI. Grok is sold through the xAI API, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry and OpenRouter, at the same base prices on Google Cloud as on xAI's own API. Its prices are shaped differently from Anthropic's, OpenAI's and Google's: output costs only two to three times input, against five to six times at those labs.

Batch requests are 20% off on Grok 4.3 to 4.7, not the 50% Anthropic, OpenAI and Google give; Grok Build 0.1 has no batch discount. What this index measures
Each day's value averages the standard prices of the Grok models people use, weighted by each model's tokens in OpenRouter's daily rankings and blended at 3 input tokens to 1 output token. When a single model carries all of xAI's ranked usage, as Grok 4.7 did in October 2026, the index equals that model's blended price. No value is published on days when no Grok model is among OpenRouter's 50 most-used models; that happened on 10 of the first 23 days of October 2026.
What moves xAI's index
- Generation changes. xAI has few price points, so the index moves mostly when usage shifts to a new model. Grok 4 cost $3/$15 in July 2025; Grok 4.5 to 4.7 cost $2/$6.
- Forced migrations. On May 15, 2026 xAI retired older models. It redirected requests for code models to Grok Build 0.1 and the rest to Grok 4.3, billed "at grok-4.3 pricing of $1.25 per 1M input tokens and $2.50 per 1M output tokens rather than the rates of the original model". Traffic left on the Grok 4 Fast models, priced at $0.20/$0.50, became several times dearer unless customers chose another model.
- Output-heavy work. Because Grok's output is priced low relative to input, the 3:1 blend matters less for xAI than for labs with steep output prices.

Why can xAI's index stay flat for weeks? It moves only when usage shifts between models or when xAI changes a price. While all ranked usage is on one model whose price does not change, the value stays at that model's blend.
How often is it updated? Once a day: each UTC day's value is calculated shortly after that day ends, from the day's OpenRouter volumes and the prices posted then. The site checks for new data every 2 to 3 hours.
